Florence Y'alls News Release
The Freedom's third error of the game brought home the winning run for Rockford in the 11th inning as the Freedom fell 6-5 in game one of the series. The Riverhawks came back from a three-run deficit for the win.
Drew Rundle blasted a solo homer to right in the second inning, his fifth of the season, to put the Freedom on top in the second.
Rockford responded with two unearned runs in the third off of Freedom starter Tim Holmes. After Holmes had a walk and hit batsmen, Chris Curley made a throwing error to load the bases. One run scored on a groundout and Matt Greener had an RBI infield single to take the lead. Justin Holloway tied the game in the fourth with a sac fly to right.
The Freedom broke the tie in the sixth. Cole Miles led off with an infield single and Chris Curley singled to left. Stephen Shults then snapped an 0-for-20 slump with a two-run double off the wall in left. It gave him 33 RBI, second on the team. Junior Arrojo added a two-out RBI single to make it 5-2. Arrojo is 7-for-11 this season with 8 RBI when runners are in scoring position with two outs this season.
Holmes gave up just the two unearned runs in six innings of work but settled for a no-decision. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out one. Of the four hits he gave up, three were infield singles. He has given up two earned runs or less in seven of his nine starts this season. Freedom starters now have quality outings in eight of the last ten games.
Rockford came back to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Chad Robinson. They had four straight singles to start the inning, with RBI hits by Jake Eigsti and Matt Greener. Luis Parache hit a sac fly to left to tie the game at 5-5. Alec Lewis pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam to keep the game tied.
Jeremy Hamilton walked to lead off the eleventh inning and moved to second on Carlos Dominguez's sacrifice bunt. With two out, Freddy Parejo hit a grounder to third that scooted under the glove of Curley for an error that scored Hamilton with the winning run.
Lewis (1-1) took the loss after allowing the unearned run in the 11th. He gave up two hits in 3 2/3 and struck out six. Brett Durand (3-2) threw three scoreless innings for the win as he held the Freedom to one hit.
The series continues on Wednesday night at 8:05 ET. Right-hander Jeff Frost will make his first start for Florence.
