June 24, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Despite an eighth inning comeback from the RubberDucks, the Erie SeaWolves snapped the six-game winning streak for Akron by a score of 9-7 on Thursday night.
Turning Point
After the RubberDucks tied up the game on an eighth inning Will Benson homer, Erie's local product and Jackson High School graduate Dillon Dingler tripled to center to score Ryan Kreidler giving Erie the late lead. Dingler would score later in the inning on a Kerry Carpenter single to stretch the lead to 9-7 SeaWolves.
Mound Presence
Alex Royalty got the start for Akron and pitched around major damage in the first two innings, only allowing a run despite multiple runners in scoring position. However, Erie would break the game open with four runs in the third off Royalty thanks to three hits to lead off the innings as well as two wild pitches. In total, Royalty turned in three innings allowing six runs while striking out four. Dakody Clemmer would follow tossing a career-high four innings of relief work allowing only one run and one hit while striking out three. Following Clemmer Nick Mikolajchak took the loss for Akron after he gave up three hits and two earned runs, giving Erie the final 9-7 lead.
Duck Tales
Akron would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when Will Benson scored on a sac-fly by Andruw Monasterio. In the second inning, the Ducks leadoff hitter Benson would hit a sac-fly of his own to bring home Josh Rolette to make it 2-2 after two frames. Rolette and Benson teamed up for another Akron run in the fourth inning when Rolette doubled into center field; then, Josh would score on Benson's double to cut the Erie lead to 6-3. Akron had a golden opportunity in the fifth inning to get themselves back into the ballgame but only add one run as Josh Rolette worked a bases loaded walk, bringing in Oscar Gonzalez. However, Akron would then ground into a double play, leaving the bases loaded. Two pitches after a controversial foul call in the bottom of the eighth, Benson came to the plate and launched a first pitch slider for a three-run home run to the Bud Light Lime Tiki Terrace in right field to tie the game at 7-7. The RubberDucks offense left a total of seven runners on base and were 5-for-16 with RISP.
