Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Fightins won a slugfest against the Rumble Ponies 10-9 in the 11th inning. Josh Stephen played hero tonight, driving in the winning run Bryson Stott from third. This marks the R-Phils first walk-off win of the season.
The R-Phils bats lead off the way they finished last night, as back-to-back doubles from Madison Stokes and McCarthy Tatum made it 1-0. Tatum would then be driven home on an RBI single from Stephen, giving starter Jack Perkins an early lead to work with.
Jack Conley sent a shot over the left field wall, his first of the season, to kick off the second inning, making the score 3-0 after two innings of play.
Perkins would give up a two-run shot in the top of third, but Stokes would strike again in response, launching a no-doubter to make the score 4-2.
The Rumble Ponies would take the lead in the fourth thanks to a four-run inning, and then tack on another in the fifth, making the score 7-4.
A sacrifice fly from Stephen would begin to chip away at the Binghamton lead, but the Rumble Ponies would answer back when Mark Vientos launched his second homerun of the game to make it 9-5.
Pinch hitter Luke Miller missed a homerun by just a matter of feet, but it did more than enough to bring in Conley from third. Then, Daniel Brito and Stott scored on a wild sequence that included three errors on one play to make it a one run game in the sixth, 9-8.
Brito's gold glove play at second stopped Binghamton from scoring in the seventh and kept the Fightins close by.
Stott then tied it up in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single, but the R-Phils were unable to score with two on and one away, sending it knotted up into the ninth.
Jonathan Hennigan held Reading in the game with two 1-2-3 innings of work. Kyle Dohy made quick work of the Rumble Ponies in the ninth, and then worked out of the jam in the top of the tenth, striking out the final two batters to escape runners on the corners with nobody out.
After no runs in the tenth, the Rumble Ponies threatened in the 11th, pushing the go-ahead run to third. A slow roller to short looked to score him, but a massive play from Stott to Conley at the plate got him just in time to keep it tied heading into the bottom half. Nick Lackey who just got the call up from High-A in the morning delivered on the mound shutting down the Ponies.
In the bottom of the 11th, Logan Landon had a huge pinch-hit single the at bat before, ripping a line drive down the line that moved Stott to third base. Stephen had seen enough as he sent a line drive to deep center field, plenty deep enough to bring in the winning run.
