Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves outlasted the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Sunday afternoon in another wild affair on the road. Binghamton smacked four home runs against Erie pitching, but the SeaWolves scored in four consecutive innings to take the series finale 9-6. Riley Greene scored three runs for the second game in a row, and Spencer Trokelson drove in three.
Greene and Torkelson combined to produce Erie's first run, when Greene doubled to open the game, and Torkelson hit a sacrifice fly to drive it in. After Binghamton had taken the lead, Greene took it a step further in the third inning with a leadoff triple, and scored on a sacrifice by Ryan Kreidler.
Erie tied the game in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded error by the Binghamton infield that allowed a pair of runs to score. They pushed ahead for good in the fifth inning when Torkelson doubled to right field to drive in a run, and another Binghamton error would later allow two more runs to score. Erie's first seven runs were charged to Oscar De La Cruz, who took the loss for Binghamton.
In the sixth inning, Erie loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks. Torkelson hit another sacrifice fly to drive one of the runners in, and Andre Lipcius capped Erie's scoring with an RBI single. The final two runs were charged to Yeizo Campos, but Campos and Josh Hejka combined to retire the final 11 Erie batters through the end of the game.
The Binghamton offense pressured Elvin Rodriguez from the start. Jake Mangum doubled to open the first inning, but Rodriguez was able to strand him at third base. Binghamton took their only lead of the game in the second inning when Nick Conti hit his first home run of the year, a three-run shot, to right field. After Erie had cut into the deficit, Rodriguez surrendered a solo home run to Wagner Lagrange to make it a two-run game again. Rodriguez only lasted four innings.
Out of the bullpen, Chavez Fernander allowed a solo home run to the first batter he faced, Carlos Rincon, but still finished the fifth inning with the lead. Yaya Chentouf tossed two innings to earn the win for Erie, but gave up another Binghamton home run when Manny Rodriguez lifted a solo shot to left field. Gerson Moreno took the eighth inning for Erie and danced around a pair of runners, but struck out the potential tying run to end the frame. Moreno tossed a perfect ninth to earn the save.
The win for Erie splits the six-game series with Binghamton, but gives the SeaWolves a decisive victory in the season series, as they won eight of the 12 contests.
Erie turns their attention to the top team in the Southwest Division, the Akron RubberDucks. Akron visits UPMC Park on Tuesday, July 27 to start a six-game series. The series starts with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
