Orlando, FL - The Orlando Solar Bears, proud affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL's Toronto Marlies, announced today they have agreed to terms with D Eric Baier and F Kristoff Kontos.
Baier (6-2, 210 lbs.) served as the Solar Bears Team Captain during the 2013-14 campaign. He scored an overtime goal in Game 5 of Orlando's Kelly Cup Playoffs series against the Cincinnati Cyclones, helping the Solar Bears stave off elimination. Baier finished the regular season tied for first in goals by a Solar Bears defensemen with nine, and finished fourth among team defensemen with 22 points. The North Kingstown, RI, native has played 169 games in the ECHL with Orlando, Trenton, and Reading, scoring 16 goals and adding 36 assists for 52 points. Baier has appeared in 35 AHL contests with Charlotte, Portland, Providence, Rockford, and Albany, tallying two points on one goal and one assist.
Kontos (6-2, 215 lbs.) is entering his first full professional season after playing in seven games with the Toledo Walleye at the end of last season. He played the previous five seasons in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League), serving as an alternate captain for the Saginaw Spirit last season while scoring a team-leading 75 points on 25 goals and 50 assists in 68 games. He also posted one goal and seven assists for eight points in five playoff contests. In his junior career, Kontos played in 337 OHL games, scoring 70 goals and adding 126 assists for 196 points. He is the son of Chris Kontos, who played 230 games in the NHL while scoring 54 goals to go along with 69 assists for 123 points. Chris Kontos' NHL career included a stint with the Los Angeles Kings where he had the opportunity to play with NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky and former Orlando Solar Bear Hubie McDonough.
