K-Wings to Team up with Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

October 3, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

KALAMAZOO- The Kalamazoo Wings in conjunction with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA) have made a fun and exciting new twist on the K-Wings long established colored ice tradition.

When the K-Wings host the Cincinnati Cyclones at Wings Stadium on Saturday, January 10th at 7:30 p.m., the ice will look like a completed canvas with the artists coming from the KIA's youth programs and members of the K-Wings Kidz Club.

Known for their colored ice games, which includes the "World Famous" St. Patrick's Day Green Ice, Pink Ice, Bell's Blue Ice and Orange Ice Games, the K-Wings are proud to create another opportunity for the community to come together.

"As a vital member of this community, we feel it is our commitment to find new and exciting ways to bring residents of southwest Michigan together," said Jim Burlew, General Manager. "Coming off of our 40th anniversary season and KIA celebrating their 90th birthday it now makes perfect sense to work together by letting the members of the KIA and K-Wings Kidz Club showcase their artistic side."

Instead of featuring one paint color, the children will be able to create multi-colored artistic work on the same ice the K-Wings and Cyclones will be playing on.

When the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts invited Slappy to their 90th birthday party in July, it became clear the new friendship would lead to more fun.

"We are tickled to be a part of Kids Paint the Ice," says Susan Eckhardt, Director of Museum Education for the KIA. "We're so happy that Slappy invited us, and we have big plans to transform the expanse of ice at the arena into a big, frosty work of art. We'll need a lot of help, so we invite kids and families to come out and help create a giant painting to celebrate our 90th birthday."

Wings Stadium ice will transform into a canvas days prior to the January 10th contest. Information on how members of the KIA or K-Wings Kidz Club can participate in this artistic showcase will be announced at a later date.

The K-Wings and KIA will also unveil at a later date how other artists will be able to show their work on January 10th.
