TULSA, OK - Tulsa 66er guard Elijah Milsap scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 116-108 victory over the previously unbeaten Iowa Energy Saturday night in Tulsa. The 66ers dominated the glass in the game, outrebounding Iowa 49-36 on the evening.
Tulsa bolted out to a 65-58 halftime lead as Milsap and Ryan Reid led the way. Milsap had 13 points in the half and Reid, a 6'8" forward, had 8 points and 8 rebounds before the break. The 66ers extended their lead to 17 points at 86-69 with 3:20 remaining in the 3rd quarter on a layup by guard Zabian Dowdell.
The Energy, who staged a 2nd half comeback the night before to beat Tulsa, scored the final seven points of the quarter to make the score 86-76 heading into the final stanza. Iowa continued their run as they outscored Tulsa 10-2 to open the 4th quarter, making the score 88-86. Guard Chris Lofton scored eight points in during the run for the Energy.
After the two teams traded buckets, the 66ers went up by 101-98 on a Larry Owens layup with 3:38 remaining in the game. After two missed shots by the Energy and two turnovers by Tulsa, Energy star Othyus Jeffers scored to bring the visitors to within one point. After Owens was called for traveling, Jeffers was fouled and went to the free throw line with a chance to put Iowa ahead. After making the first shot, Jeffers second attempt rolled off the rim, leaving the score tied at 101-101 with 2:25 remaining in the game.
With the game hanging in the balance, Tulsa went to Owens who drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to take the lead. A turnover by Energy guard Kyle Weaver gave Tulsa the ball back with under two minutes to play. Tulsa wing Robert Vaden missed a shot, but Milsap grabbed the offensive rebound to give the 66ers a new shot clock. After running down the shot clock, Dowdell drove the lane and scored to put Tulsa up by five. Iowa would get no closer than three points the rest of the way as Tulsa made all eight of their free throws in the final 0:28 of the game.
Othyus Jeffers led Iowa with 31 points while Phoenix Suns assignee Gani Lawal finished with 23 points.
