Austin Spurs News Release
AUSTIN, TEXAS, Nov. 27, 2010 - The Austin Toros opened their 2010-11 season with a 107-91 victory over their in-state rival the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in a matinee game at Cedar Park Center. Well over 2,400 fans were in attendance to see the first game of the season for the Toros in their new home. Lewis Clinch led the Toros charge that put the game out of reach for the Vipers by scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter and led all scorers with 22 total points and four rebounds.
The Toros had double digit scoring from five players including Clinch, followed by Thomas Gardener (20), Marcus Hubbard (18), Lance Thomas (16) and Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson (10). Hubbard provided a much needed spark off the bench and contributed nine rebounds and two steals in addition to his 18 point performance. Toros returning point guard Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson was one rebound shy of a triple double with 10 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. The Toros shot 43 percent from beyond the arc and forced 21 turnovers that led to 23 points.
The Vipers took an early six point lead in the first quarter, but fell behind in the second when Marcus Hubbard scored twice in the less than a minute. Shooting 20 percent from beyond the arc and 61 percent from the free throw line made it difficult for the Vipers to cut into the Toros lead. Jerel McNeal led the Vipers in scoring with 19 points followed by Patrick Patterson, Mustafa Shakur and Patrick Sullivan who each contributed 15 points.
The Toros (2-1) and RGV (1-1) will face off again on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Cedar Park Center at 5 p.m. For ticketing information please call (512) 236-8333 or visit austintoros.com.
