Ems Taking Swing at Lane County Literacy Rates with Book Drive

June 17, 2019 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release

Bookworms, unite! The Eugene Emeralds are calling all literacy enthusiasts, or those looking to clean off their bookshelves, to participate in the June Book Drive.

From June 14 to June 24, the Emeralds are teaming up with United Way and Connected Lane County to host a Children's Book Drive. During this time, fans who bring a new or gently loved children's book to the Information Booth or Ticket Office will receive a ticket voucher good for a July Emeralds game.

In Lane County, 53% of students lack essential reading skills by the time they reach third grade. One of the reasons for this is lack of access to books, especially during the summer.

The books donated by Emeralds fans will help supply United Way with books that will be used in their annual BookFest event. Before each summer vacation, K-2 students in eight Title 1 schools in Lane County are able to build up their library with several books of their choice.

"We are really excited to host this book drive," said Director of Community Relations Anne Culhanne. "Being able to share your favorite book and the love of reading is something everyone can do."

Research shows that childhood literacy rates greatly determine future success. If a student is not reading at grade level by third grade they are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

The Emeralds also help spread the joy of reading through their annual book program. This year, 53 schools took part in the program in which students were challenged to read for the chance to earn tickets to an Emeralds game.

"Learning to read and loving to read are so important for children," said Culhanne. "Not only will learning to read help students do well in school, it helps grow their imaginations and vocabulary."

The Emeralds hope fans will help turn the page on reading proficiency for Lane County kids by helping them increase access to books.

Tickets to Emeralds home games are on sale now at www.EmeraldsBaseball.com or by calling (541) 342-5367.

Stay up to date with the Emeralds by following the team on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
