Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Ore, - The Volcanoes dropped their final regular season home series after losing 5-1 to the Eugene Emeralds on Thursday night at Volcanoes Stadium.
Eloy Jimenez cracked an RBI double into the right field gap to put the Emeralds up by three runs and secure the series win. Eugene added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.
Julio Pena hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning to score the Volcanoes only run of the night.
The Emeralds first run came in the first inning after Donnie Dewees, who led the game off with a single, scored on an Andrew Ely single. Logan Webb (3-6, 4.92 ERA) was saddled with the loss after pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on nine hits. It is the longest outing in the young right-handers career.
Salem-Keizer was unable to capitalize after getting their leadoff batters on base in the first three innings. In the first, Ronnie Jebavy was stranded at third, John Riley fell victim to a double play in the second, and Pena was left on third base in the third.
Eugene's pitching staff spun a gem against the Volcanoes. Ryan Kellogg started the game and pitched a scoreless three innings, recording two strikeouts while allowing two hits.
Adbert Azolay (6-2, 2.04 ERA) replaced Kellogg and continued the excellent performance, working 5.2 innings while allowing one run and striking out a season high of 10 batters. Tyler Peitzmeier recorded the game's final out with a Dillon Dobson strikeout.
Up Next: Tomorrow, the Volcanoes will be in Boise to take on the Hawks. Luis Pino (3-1, 1.38 ERA) will start off the series against left-hander Colin Welmon (2-4, 4.67 ERA). The Volcanoes lead the season series with Hawks 5-4 and hold a 2-1 record in Boise this season.
Playoff Picture: The Volcanoes must at least take two out of three games in Boise if they hope to make the playoffs. In addition the Hops must beat the Emeralds as the two teams face off in Hillsboro. If the Hops take two of three, the Volcanoes must sweep Boise. However, if the Eugene takes the final regular season series from Hillsboro, the Volcanoes are eliminated regardless of their results in Boise.
