Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE, Ore. - Wearing throwback uniforms from multiple eras to honor Civic Stadium a day after a fire destroyed the old home of the team, the Eugene Emeralds looked like one of the championship squads from the 1970s that rocked the wooden ballpark in a 9-4 victory over Tri-City.
Eugene (7-6) took four games in the five-game series with the Dust Devils and have won five of their last six games overall. Eugene starter Carson Sands (1-1) picked up the win after allowing one run (unearned) on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Rookie David Berg picked up a save in his first professional appearance after entering in the eighth in a one-run game.
Outfielder Donnie Dewees, the Cubs' second-round choice in 2015, hit three doubles, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, to lead the Ems at the plate.
Eloy Jimenez put the Emeralds up early with a solo opposite field home run in the first inning. After Tri-City tied it up, 1-1, in the top of the second, Eugene snagged the lead once again in the third. Dewees hit his first double, swiped third and then scored on an error after a failed pickoff attempt at first.
Eugene grew its lead with a three-run fourth inning. Frandy De La Rosa beat out the throw for an infield single which scored Blake Headley from third for the first run of the inning. After a groundout and a strikeout, Dewees hit his second double to drive in a pair with two outs.
Tri-City scored twice in the sixth inning and once more in the eighth to make it a 4-3 game.
The Emeralds broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth, however, with Dewees' third double of the game. Ho-young Son drove in a run with a single before a wild pitch brought home a second. That set up Dewees, who drove in two more runs with his third double.
Notes: Former UCLA closer and 2015 sixth-round draft pick David Berg made his professional debut when he entered in the eighth inning with a runner on second and two outs...He coaxed a groundout to third to end the threat and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career save.
Up Next: The Emeralds hit the road for a three-game series at Hillsboro starting tomorrow.
Upcoming Promos: Saturday's game will feature fireworks after the fourth of July. Musicians from the Oregon Bach Festival will be on hand to play live music during the fireworks.
