Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
Salem-Keizer blew a six run lead Tuesday night, falling to the Spokane Indians 9-7 at Volcanoes Stadium.
The Volcanoes took a 7-1 lead into the seventh inning but fumbled it away, allowing the Indians to score eight runs between the seventh and eighth innings. The loss spoiled a quality outing from starter Nolan Riggs, who had allowed only one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
The game began with both clubs exchanging runs in the initial frame. The Indians struck first, taking advantage of a Riggs throwing error and scratching across a run to take an early lead. It was short-lived, however, as Salem-Keizer came roaring back. With two outs in the inning, Chris Shaw drew a walk and Miguel Gomez singled before Steven Duggar launched a three-run home run over the right field fence, putting the Volcanoes up 3-1. The homer was the first of Duggar's professional career.

Salem-Keizer scored two in the fourth and two more in the sixth, the latter coming by a two-run homer from Fernando Pujadas, his second of the season. The blast appeared to put the game out of reach, but Spokane kept fighting.

The Indians pulled within three runs in the seventh. Nate Santiago recorded the first two outs of the inning with ease but then ran into trouble, allowing three consecutive batters to reach. Jamie Potts then chopped a single into right field that allowed all three runners to score and cut the Volcanoes lead to 7-4.
The Indians completed the comeback in the eighth, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Reliever Armando Paniagua (0-1, 6.75 ERA) allowed four hits, walked two and hit a batter, surrendering the lead. Spokane emerged from the frame with a 9-7 lead and didn't look back.
Shaw nearly tied the game in the ninth, hitting a deep fly ball with Junior Amion at first, but Potts made a leaping grab up against the wall to rob the Volcanoes first baseman of (at least) extra bases. Luis Parra retired the next batter, securing his first save.
Player of the Game: Duggar was tremendous in only his second game with Salem-Keizer. The speedy outfielder went 2-for-4 with the three-run homer, his first of the season.
Up Next: The Volcanoes begin a three-game series at Boise tomorrow before returning home on July 4. Drew Leenhouts (1-1, 0.69 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. The broadcast will be available on volcanoesbaseball.com or through the TuneIn Radio app. First pitch is set for 6:15 PT.
