Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - Troy Watson gave up one run in six innings and the Lansing Lugnuts (8-8, 40-45) swatted three home runs in an 8-1 win over the Lake County Captains (7-9, 50-33) on Saturday night at Classic Park, opening a three-game series.
Griffin Conine drilled his tenth home run of the year in the first inning, Johnny Aiello hit a three-run homer in a five-run third inning, and Hunter Steinmetz belted a solo shot in the eighth, leading the Lugnuts to victory in the first game of a nine-game, ten-day road trip.
Lake County starter Juan Mota (Loss, 2-6) served up Conine's home run in the first and an unearned run on two errors in the second before getting knocked out in the third, allowing the first seven Lugnuts to reach base on one walk and six hits.
On the other side, Nuts right-hander Watson (Win, 3-2) limited the Caps to solely a second-inning Daniel Schneeman RBI groundout, scattering four hits while striking out four in matching his longest start as a pro.
Marcus Reyes blanked the Captains in the seventh and eighth innings on one hit, striking out one. Justin Watts followed with a perfect ninth, with one strikeout.
Gabriel Moreno, Ryan Gold and Steinmetz each notched two hits for the Nuts in the win, with Conine and Steinmetz each scoring a pair of runs.
Right-hander Cobi Johnson (4.95 ERA) starts the middle affair of the series on Sunday at 4 p.m., opposing Lake County northpaw Thomas Ponticelli (5.52).
The Nuts' next homestand runs from July 17-22 against the Burlington Bees and Clinton LumberKings. To live the Lug Life and purchase tickets, visit lansinglugnuts.com, call (517) 485-4500 or come to the Cooley Law School Stadium box office at 505 E. Michigan Ave. in downtown Lansing.
