Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Pawtucket, RI - Three Syracuse errors in the eighth inning led to three runs for the Pawtucket Red Sox who beat the Syracuse Chiefs, the triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, by a 6-4 final on Saturday night. The PawSox comeback win gives them two in a row over the Chiefs to start the series.
Syracuse (20-14) scored first for the second straight night with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Chris Duncan hit a two run home run, his third of the year, over the left field wall to make it 2-0.
Pawtucket (17-19) answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. PawSox catcher Dusty Brown took the first pitch from Syracuse starter Shairon Martis and hit a three run home run to left to make it 3-2.
The Chiefs drew eight walks on the evening against Pawtucket pitching, and Pedro Lopez started off the seventh with one of those eight. Justin Maxwell followed with a double to score Lopez. Maxwell later scored on a passed ball to push the Syracuse lead to 4-2.
Jason Bergmann came on to finish the sixth for Syracuse and pitched into the eighth. He gave up a leadoff single to Aaron Bates, which was followed by a single from Daniel Nava. Brown then popped out for the first out of the eighth. The next four batters started a string of errors that would eventually lead to a Pawtucket victory.
Jorge Jiminez hit a ground ball to Josh Whitesell at first which, in trying to turn a double play, he threw over the head of Lopez at second base for an error. That put runners on first and second. Niuman Romero came to the plate next and popped a bunt back to Jason Bergmann who dropped the ball. One run scored on that play. With the bases loaded, Bubba Bell hit a bouncing grounder to Pete Orr at third, and he misplayed the ball which allowed a run to score. With the bases still loaded, Luis Ordaz dropped a pop up at second base off the bat of Ryan Khoury and allowed the sixth run of the day for the PawSox to score. The final tally for the eighth inning was three errors and three runs for the PawSox.
Trailing 6-4 heading into the ninth, Syracuse went down in order to end the game.
On Sunday at McCoy Stadium, Chuck James (2-1, 4.96) is scheduled to start for Syracuse and Adam Mills (1-3, 4.58) is scheduled to start for Pawtucket. First pitch is at 1:05.
