D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (July 15, 2009) - United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United, announced today that the Eighth Annual United Celebrity Golf Tournament, presented by GEICO, raised more than $35,000. Proceeds from the event will benefit the charity's three signature programs - United Reads, Kicks for Kids and the United Soccer Club - all of which use soccer to place an emphasis on literacy, healthy lifestyles and life skills for youth in the D.C. area.
"The United Celebrity Golf Tournament is one of our best events of the year," said Foundation Manager Kate Larned. "It gives our fans, sponsors and corporate supporters a great reason to spend the day on the course, working on their golf swing alongside their favorite D.C. United players, all while raising money for a good cause."
The event drew more than 140 golfers to Reston National Golf Course in Virginia for a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start on Thursday, July 9. Peter Magellan & Friends won the tournament, with Wells Fargo and Papa John's rounding out the top three respectively.
Participants in this year's event played alongside the 2009 D.C. United players and coaches as well as United owner Will Chang, United President Kevin Payne, former United players John Harkes and A.J. Wood, Comcast SportsNet TV personalities Russ Thaler and Steve Buckhantz, WJFK Junkie JP Flaim, Celebrity Chef and Executive Chef of the Carlyle Club Rock Harper and Fox 5 News Anchor Steve Cheveney. Thaler also served as the night's emcee.
In addition to the presenting sponsors, United for D.C. benefited from the generous assistance of hole sponsors HKS, Valcourt Building Services, Clark Construction, Arent Fox, Comstock Partners LC, Comcast SportsNet, TNT Design, and Drilling Tennis and Golf.
