Chicago Fire FC News Release
FOXBOROUGH, MA (July 15, 2009) - The Chicago Fire advanced to the 2009 SuperLiga Final defeating the reigning SuperLiga champion New England Revolution 2-1 tonight at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. The Fire will host the winner of Santos Laguna versus Tigres UANL, both of the Mexican Primera Division, in the 2009 SuperLiga Final at TOYOTA PARK on August 5. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast nationally on TeleFutura. The Fire are competing in SuperLiga for the first time in the tournament's third year.
The Fire opened scoring in the 34th minute of play as Cuauhtémoc Blanco sent a cross from the left side of the field into the box for Brian McBride running into the area. McBride finished on a right-footed shot from 12-yards out for the one goal advantage.
New England leveled the score in the 44th minute as New England midfielder Chris Tierney chipped a ball to Edgaras Jankauskas just inside the box. The Revolution forward controlled the ball with his chest and sent a left-footed shot that deflected off of Fire midfielder John Thorrington into the back of the net for a 1-1 score heading into the half.
In the 63rd minute, Fire forward Brian McBride was fouled by New England defender Kevin Alston just outside the area. Blanco and midfielder Marco Pappa both lined up over the free kick opportunity. Pappa ran over the ball and Blanco placed a bending ball around the wall and inside the left post for the game-winning goal.
The Fire will host the winner of Santos Laguna versus Tigres UANL on August 5 at TOYOTA PARK (7 p.m. CT, TeleFutura).
