Eight Straight: Early Onslaught Sparks Another Dash Win

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (APRIL 21, 2010) - Winston-Salem pounded Myrtle Beach pitching for eight runs over the first two innings en route to a smoldering 11-4 victory on Wednesday night at BB&T Coastal Field. The Dash picked up its eighth straight win and will go for the four-game sweep on Thursday night.

Winston (10-3) wasted no time in peppering the scoreboard as Brandon Short led off the game with a double to left field against Pelicans starter Yeliar Castro (2-1). After Short reached third via a fielder's choice, he scored on an infield single off the bat of Jon Gilmore to give the Dash a 1-0 lead. Gilmore extended his hitting streak to nine games with the base hit.

After Seth Loman flied to left, the Dash loaded the bases on a Jason Bour double and a walk to Kenny Williams, Jr. Luis Sierra then pumped a double to left, driving in three to put Winston-Salem ahead 4-0.

After Charlie Leesman (2-1) breezed through a perfect bottom of the first, the Dash bats stayed hot in the second inning. After Castro retired the first two batters, the next six reached base. Loman brought two home with a wall-ball double to right, Bour doubled in a run, and Sierra collected his fourth RBI of the night with a run-scoring single to center field to make it 8-0 Winston-Salem after just an inning and a half.

Leesman allowed single runs in the second, third, and fifth, but was much sharper than his most recent outing. Last week in a win against Potomac, he walked five and threw more balls than strikes. On Wednesday, the lefthander only walked two and struck out five in five innings of work. Dash starters have now allowed three runs or fewer in all 13 games this season.

Winston-Salem's offense made sure the Pelicans (4-9) did not creep back into the game with runs in the third, fourth and seventh. Eduardo Escobar went 3 for 5 on the night and drove in a run in the third inning to put the Dash ahead 9-1. Drew Garcia's ground out in the fourth scored Bour, and Loman cracked an opposite field solo home run in the eighth inning for Winston's final run of the night.

The trio of Dylan Axelrod, Charlis Burdie, and Gregory Infante worked the final four innings of the game, yielding one unearned run on no hits.

Garcia finished the game 0 for 5 and saw hit hitting streak snapped at nine. He was the only Dash player to not reach base on a night Winston-Salem stroked 16 base hits, the second most for the team all season. The 11-run output was also the second largest of 2010. Short's 3-6 performance pushed his hitting streak to ten games, which ties him for the longest streak in the Carolina League this season.

The Dash's win streak is the longest for the team since it won eight in a row from May 30 - June 7 of last year. Winston-Salem has outscored its opponents 60-27 during the streak and the team is tied for the best record in the Carolina League with the Salem. The Red Sox swept a double-header with Lynchburg on Wednesday to keep pace with the Dash.

Winston has won three straight series and sent Myrtle Beach to its ninth loss in ten games since starting the season 3-0.

Joe McEwing's squad looks to sweep its second straight series on Thursday night. RHP Nevin Griffith (2-0, 1.50) hopes to continue his outstanding start to the season against RHP J.J. Hoover (0-0, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at BB&T Coastal Field. The webcast pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.

The Dash returns to Winston-Salem on Friday night for a three-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks at BB&T Ballpark.
