Early Runs Too Much as Dash Rout Pelicans

April 21, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Before the Pelicans had a chance to take a swing, they found themselves in a 4-0 hole, and unfortunately for the fans on the Grand Strand, even two home team home runs couldn't bring the fans to their feet as the Pelicans dropped their sixth straight contest, 11-4 to the Winston-Salem Dash.

Relief pitcher Yeliar Castro got the spot start in place of Zeke Spruill, who landed on the disabled list on Monday, but Castro (2-1) couldn't contain the sizzling bats of the visiting Dash, surrendering eight runs on eight hits in his two innings of work.

Luis Sierra had himself a career night for the Dash, going 3-for-5 with four runs batted in, including a bases-clearing double in the first inning off Castro. All in all, six Dash batters collected multiple hits as the visitors clanged out 16 knocks against Pelican pitching. The Dash came into the game leading the league in team batting average (.289) and second in team ERA (2.62), and didn't do anything to take the shine off their now eight-game winning streak.

A few bright spots for the Pelicans included the first home runs of the season for shortstop Amadeo Zazueta and catcher Jesus Sucre. Relief pitcher Juan Abreu mostly held the Dash in check after the game got out of hand, surrendering just one run in four innings of work, and Jaye Chapman whiffed a pair in his lone inning of work.

The Pelicans have now lost consecutive series to Southern Division foes, but can salvage a game in this series with a win from BB&T Coastal Field tomorrow. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 ET as it will be Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark. Bud and Bud Light drafts will be only one dollar from 6-8 PM presented by Budweiser, Malibu's Surf Club, and the Weekly Surge. It will also be Going Green Night at the ballpark as the Pelicans will educate fans on how to reduce their carbon footprint.
