Red Sox Sweep Double Dip with Hillcats

Salem won both halves of a doubleheader with Lynchburg on Wednesday night at Memorial Ballpark, winning game one 9-1 and game two 5-3.

The Hillcats would strike early again in game one last night with a run in the top of the first. Cats catcher Devin Mesoraco brought in the run with an RBI sacrifice fly. The Red Sox though wasted no time responding with a two-run bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.

In the third inning Salem would extend their advantage with a three-run frame. The Sox only had one hit in the inning that inlcuded two errors, a balk, a walk and a hit by pitch.

The Red Sox tacked on two more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to finish the game one scoring and secure a 9-1 win. Mitch Dening had a two-run double in the fifth and Will Middlebrooks singled in a run in the two-run sixth. Middlebrooks went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the win.

Starter Fabian Williamson (3-0) got the win for Salem (9-3) and starter Curtis Partch (1-2) took the loss for Lynchburg (5-7) in game one of the doubleheader.

In game two of the twin bill Salem would score first with a run in the opening frame. Drew Hedman singled in Oscar Tejeda to get the Red Sox on the board. An error in that inning would aid that run and the Hillcats would commit three errors in the first three innings that would lead to all three of the Sox runs.

Salem tacked on anther run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by Oscar Tejeda to make it a 4-2 Red Sox lead. Another run would could come across in the fifth when Anthony Rizzo scored on the fourth error of the game by the Hillcats.

Lynchburg would plate a run in the seventh inning to pull within a pair, but got no closer. Chris McMurray drove-in his first run of the season in the seventh.

The win went to starter Jeremy Kehrt (1-0) for Salem (10-3) and the loss went to starter Brad Boxberger (1-1) for Lynchburg (5-8). Kehrt struck out eight and only allowed one earned run in five innings of work.

The final game of the four-game series is on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Salem Memorial Ballpark. Left-hander Travis Webb (0-1, 4.50) will get the start for the Hillcats opposite righty Caleb Clay (1-0, 4.00) for the Red Sox.
