Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Summerlin, NV - For the second time in 10 days, the Albuquerque Isotopes made home run history. The Topes hit eight long balls - tying the team record established on June 15 - as they demolished the Las Vegas Aviators 19-6 on Saturday night at Las Vegas Ballpark. Albuquerque has won nine of their last 12 games.
Wynton Bernard set the tone for the entire night when he opened the contest with a home run, his fourth leadoff homer of the 2022 season.
After Las Vegas plated a pair of runs off Isotopes starter Brandon Gold in the first, Bret Boswell tucked a home run inside the left-field foul pole in the second for a 2-2 tie. The game was not even for long, because Sam Hilliard lofted an opposite-field solo shot in the third, giving Albuquerque the lead.
The Aviators scored two more off Gold in the third before Vince Fernandez hit a solo homer in the fourth, making it 5-3 Vegas after four.
The visitors began their onslaught in the fifth when Coco Montes delivered an RBI single before Boswell's RBI groundout tied it at 5.
In the sixth, Carlos Pérez took a bases-loaded walk, giving Albuquerque a 6-5 lead in what was at the time a see-saw battle. But it quickly became a one-sided ballgame, as Montes then hit an opposite-field grand slam to make it 10-5 in favor of the Isotopes.
Bernard connected on his second homer of the game in the seventh - a two-run blast, before Pérez's RBI double upped the lead to 13-5 at the stretch.
Jonathan Morales got in on the long ball action with a solo shot in the eighth off former Isotopes pitcher Ryan Castellani. Following two more hits, Scott Schebler demolished an opposite-field three-run homer, Albuquerque's seventh of the night.
The record-tying blast came in the ninth, when Morales hit his second of the night off Las Vegas infielder Nate Mondou, who recorded the final four outs on the mound for his team.
Colorado Rockies rehabbing left fielder Kris Bryant played his fourth game of this stint with the Isotopes, finishing 0-for-3 with two walks. Bryant is 1-for-13 with a double, two walks and seven strikeouts in the series.
Topes Scope: - Albuquerque has hit 50 home runs in June - one shy of the team record for long balls in a month. They hit 51 in August 2007 and April 2019.
- The Isotopes set a club record with eight homers in a road game. Their previous high was seven in an 11-4 win over the Omaha Royals on Aug. 18, 2007.
- Albuquerque has launched 16 home runs over the first five games in Las Vegas.
- Albuquerque also scored their most ever runs in a road contest (19), eclipsing the mark of 17 originally set May 12, 2004 on Salt Lake, then tied on April 14, 2019 at Tacoma.
- Tonight's 13-run win was the largest margin of victory for the Topes on the road. The previous high of 12 was established twice: Aug. 8, 2006 at Colorado Springs (15-3) and July 12, 2019 at El Paso (13-1).
- Wynton Bernard registered his team-leading 20th multi-hit game of the season. It was his first four-hit contest since Aug. 22, 2021 at Las Vegas.
- Bernard has four leadoff home runs this year, the most in a campaign for an Isotope since Tony Abreu hit five in 2009. Abreu holds the club record.
- Scott Schebler hit Albuquerque's first pinch-hit jack since Todd Czinege on Sept. 1, 2019 at Fresno. Schebler also broke a personal 92 at-bat homerless drought, as he had not gone deep since May 15 vs. Sugar Land.
- Coco Montes crushed the sixth grand slam for the Isotopes this season. Their team record is nine in the 2019 season.
- Bernard and Jonathan Morales became the second duo to each have multi-home run games in the same contest for Albuquerque this year, joining Sean Bouchard and Ryan Vilade on June 15 vs. Salt Lake. The Isotopes have a total of nine multi-homer contests by a player in 2022.
- Bernard had his third multi-homer game of the season (also April 22 at Round Rock and June 12 at El Paso) and fourth in his Isotopes career, after having done so on June 27, 2021 vs. Tacoma.
- Morales hit two home runs in a game for the second time in his professional career. He previously accomplished the feat Aug. 24, 2015 while playing for the Gulf Coast League Braves in his first season. Morales has gone deep five times in his last 15 games (spanning 51 at-bats) after having none over his previous 119 at-bats.
- Montes is 7-for-14 with a double, two homers and six RBI in this series.
- Kyle Holder broke a 2-for-40 drought by going 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles. The slump dated back to May 28. It was his third three-hit game of the season: April 24 at Round Rock and May 26 vs. Round Rock.
- Albuquerque starter Brandon Gold allowed a homer for his sixth straight start and has relented a total of 11 during that span.
On Deck: Right-handed pitcher Ashton Goudeau is scheduled to start for Albuquerque in the series finale Sunday night while Las Vegas is undecided on a starter. First pitch from Nevada is set for 8:05 MT (7:05 PT). The Isotopes are aiming for a series split.
