
Edwards, Waters Lead Red Claws

Grand Rapids, MI - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, got an all-around solid performance by Boston Celtics assignee Carsen Edwards, taking down the Grand Rapids Drive Sunday, 108-103.
Maine (9-4) was led by Edwards, who is on assignment from the Boston Celtics. Edwards finished with 28 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. Celtics Two-Way player Tremont Waters also scored 28 points, adding 5 boards and 4 assists to go with 3 steals. Kaiser Gates recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Grand Rapids (9-8) was led by Sekou Doumbouya with 20 points, while Donta Hall and Louis King each added 19 in the loss.
The Drive started the game with three quick buckets - when Donta Hall slammed home an offensive board, Grand Rapids forced a early timeout with a 6-0 lead. Yante Maten stopped the run with a pair of baskets. The Red Claws went on an 11-2 run to take the lead. Gates slammed home a fast-break dunk, and followed that up with another bucket to make it 20-13. Edwards' steal and bucket put Maine up 9, but the Red Claws only led 22-19 after 1.
In the 2nd, Sheldon Jeter's three followed by an Edwards steal and dunk put Maine up 29-21. The Drive went on a small run to cut the deficit to 4. On the fast break, Hall's dunk gave Grand Rapids a 35-34 lead. Gates' corner three put Maine back up by 2. The two teams would see-saw back and forth, with Adam Woodbury tying the game at the free throw line, and Maine and Grand Rapids went into the half tied at 48. Waters led all scorers with 15 points at the break, with Maine shooting 40% (17-43) at the half. Grand Rapids was slightly better, shooting 45% (19-42) in the first two quarters.
Waters opened the 3rd with a three-pointer. Waters' followed that up with a driving lay-up. Gates heated up outside, with his three making it 60-52 Red Claws. The Drive would not go away. Tra-Deon Hollins' three-point play cut it to 70-67. Edwards drove the distance and scored to make it 77-72 Red Claws after 3.
In the 4th, Louis King buried a three to tie the game at 80. The Red Claws then rattled off 7 straight points, with Edwards draining a trey. Gates knocked in a deep three to make it a 94-87 lead with 3:33 to go. Waters fed Fall for the easy dunk, but the Drive answered with a three by Sekou Dembouya to make it 96-93. Crucial free throws in the final 1:30 by Edwards and Waters helped maintain a 4 point advantage, but Hall tied the game at the line, making it 100-100 with :31 left. Edwards' three-point play with :24 left put Maine up 3. Maten's big block gave Maine the ball back and put the game away for good.
The Red Claws shot 40% (33-82) from the field, 38% (13-34) from three-point range, and 19-26 from the free throw line. Grand Rapids shot 44% (34-78) from the floor, 41% (12-29) from downtown, and 14-18 from the charity stripe.
Maine's road trip continues this week in Las Vegas at the 2019 NBA G League Winter Showcase. The Red Claws will play Canton on Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern.
