Edquist's Shutout Earns Him USHL Goalie of the Week Honors

Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols picked up their first weekly award of the 2015-16 season as 17-year-old goaltender Ryan Edquist (Lakeville, Minn.) received CCM USHL Goaltender of the Week honors following his stellar performance on Saturday night in Muskegon.

A University of Minnesota commit at age 15, Edquist, who was making just his second USHL start, faced a steady diet of Lumberjack shots as the opponents outshot Madison, 40-22.

However, Edquist received a nice cushion in the second period off goals from Haralds Egle, Ryan Lohin, and Tyson McLellan.

Edquist's ability to hold the fort through 20 minutes bought his squad time to find the offensive juices in the middle period.

Following Egle's opening tally, Edquist made a pair of stellar penalty kill saves on Matej Paulovic on a jam attempt at the left post before turning in a second dandy denial off Collin Adams on a backdoor pass from Paulovic to preserve the Capitols' lead.

While he had the big cushion to work with, Edquist continued to steal the show in the third, fending off a total of five Muskegon power plays on the night in reaching the 40-save plateau, the most saves ever by a Capitols goalie in a shutout performance. His shutout was tested in the final three minutes on a dangerous looking three-on-two, but he came up with a slot answer on an Adams one-timer for his 40th and final stop.

Edquist becomes the second Capitols goalie to take home CCM USHL Goaltender of the Week honors. Former Capitol and current Ferris State freshman Darren Smith turned the trick three times in 2014-15.

Edquist and the Capitols look to piggyback the momentum of a 10-goal weekend when they complete a span of five road games in their first six overall contests against the U.S. U17 National Team Development Program. Puck drop on Oct. 16-17 from Plymouth, Mich. is set for 6 p.m. CT each night. Coverage can be heard on 106.7 FM/1670 AM, The Zone.

Madison returns to the Alliant Energy Center on Oct. 23 for a three-game weekend set against the Chicago Steel & Bloomington Thunder. Tickets for each game are available by calling (608) 257-CAPS or visiting www.MadCapsHockey.com.
