Edmonton Oil Kings Take First Steps At 2007 WHL Bantam Draft

May 2, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings will take their first steps into the Western Hockey League on Thursday, May 3rd, when they begin the process of populating their bench at the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft.

This year's WHL Bantam Draft will take place in Calgary, Alberta, and provides an orderly transfer of bantam aged players (14-15 years of age) to the WHL Protected Player List. Each team is permitted to draft bantam aged players from the four western provinces, as well as from the western United States. As the lone expansion franchise in the WHL, the Edmonton Oil Kings will be granted the third overall pick in the first round, and will then choose first in each additional round other than the third round. The Oil Kings third round pick was provided to the Medicine Hat Tigers as compensation for the hiring of Bob Green as the Oil King's General Manager.

"The Bantam draft is obviously very important to our future on-ice success," said Bob Green, General Manager of the Edmonton Oil Kings. "Our goal as a franchise is to build a team that can compete for league championships and Memorial Cups, and it starts with this Thursday's draft."

Bantam players drafted by the Edmonton Oil Kings will take part in a Developmental Camp, along with other selected invitees, on May 19-20th. Further details will be released at a later date.

A complete list of Edmonton Oil Kings draft picks from the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft will be released on Thursday, May 3rd, immediately following the draft and posted online at www.oilkings.ca. Fans can also follow each round of the draft live online at www.whl.ca.
