Chiefs Select 12th Overall In Bantam Draft

May 2, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

The Spokane Chiefs will have the 12th overall selection in next Thursday's WHL Bantam Draft from Calgary, Alberta. The Draft is the WHL's talent identification process and serves as the first opportunity for WHL teams to add 1992 born players to their respective 50 player lists.

The Chiefs held the first overall selection last year and picked defenseman Jared Cowen from Allan, Saskatchewan. Cowen appeared in six regular season games and in all six playoff games. Cowen will be eligible to play in Spokane on a full-time basis this year.

Of the players on Spokane's post season roster, 16 of them were products of the Bantam Draft including four first round selections by the Chiefs. Adam Hobson (12th overall, 2002), Drayson Bowman (eighth overall, 2004), Mitch Wahl (fourth overall, 2005) and Cowen (first overall, 2006) were all Spokane's top selection in the bantam draft.

The Chiefs have also been able to find some gems in the later rounds with five current Chiefs having been selected in the fifth round or later, including Sean Zimmerman (seventh round, 2003) and Chris Bruton (eighth round, 2002). Zimmerman has been drafted and signed by the New Jersey Devils and Bruton was selected as the Chiefs Player's Player last season.

Bowman and Wahl, both U.S. born players, were have been named the Chiefs Rookies of the Year the past two seasons as 16-year-olds.
