ECHL Opening Weekend Features 29 Games

The ECHL opens its 17th season on Friday with 13 games scheduled, including Alaska visiting Idaho, who will raise its 2004 Kelly Cup Champions banner and present championship rings prior to the season opener at the Bank of America Centre.

Columbia will host South Carolina in a rematch of the Southern Division Semifinals that saw the Stingrays upset the Inferno in four games. The Florida Everblades will raise their Eastern Conference Champions banner to the rafters in Germain Arena prior to their game against the Texas Wildcatters.

It will be a historic night at Bakersfield Centennial Gardens when the Victoria Salmon Kings, who are the first Canadian team in the 17-year history of the ECHL, take the ice against the Bakersfield Condors. In other West Division games on Friday, Las Vegas visits Fresno and defending Brabham Cup Champion San Diego travels to Long Beach as the Ice Dogs open their 10th season at Long Beach Arena.

It will be a meeting of long-time rivals Louisiana and Mississippi, who finished one point apart last season, at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum while Atlantic City travels south to visit Pee Dee.

Reading and Trenton renew their rivalry with the Royals visiting the Titans on Friday and the Titans visiting Reading on Saturday as the Royals raise their Northern Division Champions banner. In other North Division action on Friday, Dayton will travel to Peoria and Wheeling visits Toledo.

There are 13 games scheduled for Saturday, including Johnstown hosting Wheeling as the Chiefs open their 17th ECHL season at historic Cambria County War Memorial, where the famous movie "Slapshot" was filmed. Atlantic City will visit Greenville on Saturday in a match-up of the Kelly Cup Champions from 2002 and 2003, respectively, and the San Diego Gulls will raise their Brabham Cup Champions banner before hosting the Fresno Falcons.

In other games on Saturday, Pensacola will visit Mississippi in a South Division battle and Augusta travels to Pee Dee for an East Division clash. Columbia hosts Gwinnett and Dayton plays at Toledo in a North Division game. In the West Division, Las Vegas travels to Long Beach while Charlotte visits South Carolina in an East Division contest. Saturday will also feature the second games between Victoria and Bakersfield, Alaska and Idaho, and Texas and Florida.

Opening weekend wraps up with three games on Sunday as Victoria travels to Fresno, Dayton visits Johnstown and Bakersfield plays at Long Beach.
