Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced

PORTLAND, ME "" The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of July 7th through July 13th:

Binghamton Mets outfielder Travis Taijeron has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 7th-July 13th. The 25-year old batted .400 (8-for-20) with one double, three home runs, 10 RBI, five runs scored, two walks and a .900 slugging percentage in five games for the B-Mets last week. Taijeron, who is a native of La Mesa, California, had at least one hit in all five games he played in last week and drove in at least one run in four of those games, including a pair of games in which he drove in four runs. He kicked off his week going 3-for-5 with two homers, four RBI and two runs scored in an 11-4 win against the visiting Portland Sea Dogs on Monday night and followed that up by homering and driving in four runs in a 13-3 win over Portland on Thursday. The 6'2", 200 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in slugging percentage (.900) and OPS (1.355) last week and tied for the league lead in RBI (10). He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in home runs (3-tied 2nd), total bases (18-tied 3rd) and batting average (.400-tied 8th). Travis was selected by the New York Mets in the 18th round of the 2011 draft after hitting .392 with 16 homers, 59 runs scored and 51 RBI during his final season at Cal Poly Pomona.

Virgil Vasquez, a right-handed starting pitcher for the New Britain Rock Cats, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 7th-July 13th. The 6'3", 205 lb. hurler started one game for the Rock Cats last week and posted a record of 1-0 with eight strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Vasquez, who is a native of Santa Barbara, California, made his lone appearance of the week on Thursday at New Hampshire and threw a complete game shutout to lift the Rock Cats to a 4-0 victory. He finished with eight strikeouts and scattered five hits without walking a batter while throwing his first shutout since the 2008 season when he was a member of the Toledo Mud Hens. The 32-year old was the only pitcher in the Eastern League to throw a nine-inning complete game last week and was one of only three pitchers in the league to throw a shutout last week. Vasquez led all Eastern League pitchers in WHIP (0.56) last week and tied for the league lead in ERA (0.00). He also finished ranked sixth in batting average against (.172) and tied for sixth in wins (1). Virgil, who has a record of 5-5 with 71 strikeouts a 3.63 ERA over 91.2 innings pitched in 16 games this season for the Rock Cats, was signed by the Minnesota Twins as a Minor League free agent on December 11, 2012.
