PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending July 3rd:
Reading Phillies outfielder/third baseman Jim Deschaine has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending July 3rd. Deschaine had an amazing week, blasting five home runs while hitting .381 (8-for-21) with two doubles, 10 RBI, seven runs scored, one walk and a 1.190 slugging percentage in five games for the R-Phils. The 6'0", 200 lb. slugger hit a pair of solo homers in a 3-2 win over Akron on Tuesday and went deep three times and drove in five runs in a 13-5 victory over Erie on Sunday. The 27-year old is currently batting .274 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs, 35 runs scored and 35 RBI in 75 games with Reading this season. Jim, a native of Bristol, Connecticut, was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a minor league free agent on May 8, 2003.
Jon Papelbon, a right-handed pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 3rd. In his only appearance of the week the 6'4", 230 lb. hurler tossed six innings of no-hit baseball to pick up a win in Portland's 5-1 victory over the Norwich Navigators at Hadlock Field on Saturday. The 24-year old native of Jacksonville, Florida struck out 10 batters in the game, improving his record to 5-2 on the season and lowering his ERA to 2.48, which is currently ranked second in the league. Papelbon, who was ranked by Baseball America as the third best prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization prior to the start of the season, was promoted to Triple-A on July 3rd. Jon was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 4th round of the June 2003 draft.
