Making It Interesting

Last night, the Binghamton Mets came back from a 9-3 deficit, scoring four times in the ninth to send the game into extra innings, but Rob Cosby's second home run of the game gave the New Hampshire Fisher Cats a 10-9, 11-inning win in front of 6,307, the largest NYSEG Stadium crowd of the year. Jeff Duncan was 3 for 4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored and Brett Harper doubled twice and homered once for the B-Mets, who lost a season-high-tying fourth straight.

Double (Or Homer) Or Nothing

In his first five games with the B-Mets, Harper is 5 for 18, which computes to a modest .278 average. However, all five of those hits are for extra bases (2 2B, 3 HR) and three of them, including his game-tying RBI double last night, have either tied a game or put the B-Mets ahead.

Déjà vu?

Last night's loss put the B-Mets at a season-low three games below .500 for the third time this year. They also reached that point after a loss to Norwich June 11th and after falling to Reading May 18th. In the previous two instances, the B-Mets reeled off three straight victories to get back to .500. Binghamton's been over .500 once since June 5th.

Not Good At Openers

After winning two of their first three games in both April and May (and posting winning records in each month), the B-Mets have struggled at the beginning of the last two months, falling to 0-4 in July with yesterday's loss. The B-Mets also lost their first four June contests before winning at Altoona June 7th and wound up starting off that month 1-8. Binghamton had to win 11 of the month's final 18 games to finish 12-15.

Extras Notes

Last night's game was the sixth home game the B-Mets have played this season that has gone more than nine innings and just the second they've lost. The B-Mets also lost to Akron 4-3 in eight innings in the second game of a doubleheader May 4th. Binghamton has yet to win an extra-inning contest on the road (0-4).

On The Mound

RHP Yusmeiro Petit (2-2, 3.02)

Last Time Out: Thu. vs. NB (ND): 7 2/3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 7 K (W 6-4)...Yusmeiro turned in his longest outing of the season, giving up runs in the first and fourth on a groundout and a Luis Jimenez home run, respectively. The righthander departed after allowing a Doug Deeds RBI triple in the eighth, tying the game 3-3. Deeds would later score, but the B-Mets scored three times in the bottom of the inning to get Yusmeiro off the hook. It was the first time Yusmeiro's worked more than seven innings since his second pro season when he was with SS-A Brooklyn, pitching eight shutout innings at Hudson Valley on September 1st, 2003.

This Season: The Eastern League All-Star has gone at least six innings in his last three starts and four of his last five and has yielded three earned runs or fewer in 11 of his 13 startst. Lefties are hitting .319 with seven home runs against Yusmeiro, compared to a .177 average and one home run for the righthanded hitters.

Against New Hampshire: Yusmeiro has yet to give up an earned run in three starts against the Fisher Cats, going 0-1, getting a no-decision on June 14th at NYSEG Stadium (2 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, BB, 6 K) in his first start in over three weeks after shoulder tightness. He also lost 2-1 at New Hampshire in the first game of a doubleheader April 24th (4 2/3 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 5 K) and got a no-decision in Binghamton's home opener April 14th (4 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 5 K).

Background: The Maracaibo, Venezuela native is in his fourth season in the Mets organization. Last season, the righthander was 12-6 with a 2.20 ERA in 26 regular-season starts between Low-A Capital City, High-A St. Lucie and Binghamton.
