Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

(LINCOLN, NEB.) – Though not surrounded by their usual cast, LHP Josh Merrigan and C Rich Rodrigues, the Canaries' representatives in Tuesday's All-Star game, were up to their usual tricks despite losing the game by a 4-2 score. Merrigan tossed a scoreless third inning, while Rodrigues threw out the only two runners who tried to steal bases for the East squad in the game.

In the top of the first, CF Anthony Monegan singled to lead off the game for the East All-Stars, but was promptly erased when he was caught stealing by Rodrigues. RF Cory Harris of St. Paul, who was 3-for-3 in the game, singled immediately following, and was also shortly nabbed by Rodrigues trying to swipe second. Rodrigues was hitless in two trips to the plate before being replaced by Lincoln's C Ryan Smith to start the sixth inning.

Merrigan relieved LHP Jodie Kennedy of Fargo-Moorhead to pitch the third inning despite having just thrown 8.0 innings in Sunday's Canaries win over the Lincoln Saltdogs. The left-hander allowed a one-out infield single to Harris before striking out 2B Justin Hall of St. Paul and inducing an inning-ending groundout off the bat of 1B Wes Chamberlain of Gary.

The Canaries resume play at 7:03 p.m. on Thursday as they start a four-game home set with the Sioux City Explorers. After an off day next Monday, the Birds then host the RedHawks and the Winnipeg Goldeyes for three games each to close out a 13-game homestand excluding the All-Star break.
