Last Game

Chicago Fire 2, Earthquakes 0; July 18, 2009; Toyota Park; Bridgeview, Illinois

The San Jose Earthquakes lost a tough road game 2-0 to the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park Saturday night. The Fire scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to earn the win. Chicago Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco set up a Patrick Nyarko goal in the 82nd minute then added one of his own with a sublime shot in stoppage time to give the Fire the victory. Prior to Nyarko's goal, their last home game in MLS play was May 9, four games ago. But the Nyarko goal came as a result of the Fire trying to make something happen. Forward Chris Rolfe chased a ball into the right corner against an Earthquakes defender, who in his rush to release the ball sent it out to Blanco in the midfield. Blanco set himself up for the pass over the defense to Nyarko, who sent a one-touch shot past Earthquakes 'keeper Joe Cannon from close range. Blanco scored himself in stoppage time, taking advantage of a poor clearance by the Earthquakes defense. Wilman Conde raced forward to intercept the ball, playing it to Blanco right on the edge of the area. Blanco stood on the ball before lifting a subtle chip that Cannon could barely get a finger on, the ball just looping over him and settling into the back of the net.

Last Game vs. D.C. United

Earthquakes 2, D.C. United 1; September 6, 2008; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 2-1 victory over D.C. United at Buck Shaw Stadium. Arturo Alvarez and Darren Huckerby scored for the second straight game to lead the Quakes. Santino Quaranta scored the lone goal for D.C. United. San Jose attacked from wide positions, with Ronnie O'Brien and Darren Huckerby constantly testing the D.C. defense. In the 11th minute, Ronnie O'Brien split two United defenders to break in alone from the right side, but his shot from 15 yards out was saved by Louis Crayton. The Earthquakes managed to keep the rebound in play, but then Arturo Alvarez's blast from 20 yards went wide left. Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop made no changes to his team that knocked off Kansas City last weekend, and after 18 minutes, he saw his side break through. Huckerby stole the ball from Gonzalo Martinez in midfield and broke in from the left side. His centering pass found a wide open Alvarez, who easily beat Crayton from 12 yards out to put the Earthquakes in the lead. San Jose kept up the pressure. Scott Sealy stole the ball in midfield and fired a shot from the top of the arc in the 40th minute that forced a Crayton save. Just before the halftime whistle, it was O'Brien slipping the ball through to Huckerby up the middle, but he missed wide left with his shot from 15 yards. The second half started like the first half ended, with San Jose threatening to score. In the 50th minute, an O'Brien free kick fed Francisco Lima at the top of the box, but his shot missed wide left from 20 yards out. In the 51st minute, it was Sealy with a free kick from the left top corner of the penalty area, but his attempt was just inches over the crossbar. Huckerby finally put San Jose up 2-0 in the 62nd minute. Eric Denton started the play by finding Sealy down the left side. Sealy centered it for Huckerby, whose shot from 15 yards beat Crayton inside the left post. When D.C. pulled Gallardo in the 75th minute, it looked like the Quakes could easily ride out the final minutes, but United pulled a goal back on fine individual effort by Quaranta just seconds later. Taking a pass from Dyachenko, Quaranta dribbled around a pair San Jose defenders at the top of the box and beat Joe Cannon from 18 yards out with a left-footed blast. United then pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but the Earthquakes stood firm, counterattacking through Huckerby and O'Brien to effectively close out the match.
