Last Match

Earthquakes 1, D.C. United 1; Saturday, May 1, 2004; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes held on for a 1-1 tie with D.C. United on Saturday at Spartan Stadium. A Troy Dayak goal gave the Quakes a 1-0 first half lead, but United responded with the equalizer in the 66th minute to give the Quakes (1-2-2, five points) their second tie of the season. San Jose midfielder Richard Mulrooney made history in the match by starting his 130th career game as he broke assistant coach John Doyle's club record in that category. The Quakes pressured D.C. in the 31st minute, forcing Nick Rimando to make a tough diving save. Landon Donovan started the play when he received a pass deep on the right side of the United penalty area and then sent a pass to Ronnie Ekelund. The D.C. defense collapsed on Ekelund, and the ball squirted into the middle of the box, where an open Ching blasted a shot that a diving Rimando was able to deflect out of danger. San Jose finally broke through to take the lead 1-0 in the 33rd minute on Troy Dayak's first regular season MLS goal since May 5, 2001. Jeff Agoos whipped a free kick into the middle of the United penalty box from the right side of the field. A surging Dayak sprinted in towards the goal and beat Bryan Namoff to the ball before powering a header past a diving Rimando to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead they would take into the halftime break. D.C. United tied the game in the 66th minute when Bobby Convey sent a cross from the right side across the field and over the Quakes back line. San Jose defender Craig Waibel jumped in an attempt to knock the ball down, but it went over him and directly to the feet of an open Dema Kovalenko near the left post. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Kovalenko settled the ball and fired a shot past Onstad to knot the game at 1-1.

Last Match vs. MetroStars

MetroStars 2, Earthquakes 0; Sunday, October 5, 2003; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes were defeated 2-0 by the MetroStars October 5 at Spartan Stadium. Despite the loss, the Quakes secured the first Western Conference championship in team history when the Colorado Rapids lost to the Kansas City Wizards the night before. The MetroStars received a first-half goal from Amado Guevara and a late goal by Steve Jolley to down the Quakes and shut them out for the first time since July 12. The MetroStars took the lead in the 30th minute on a goal from Guevara. Earthquakes defender Craig Waibel attempted to clear the ball following a Metros attack, but the ball was deflected to MetroStars midfielder Eddie Gaven in the center of the field about 24-yards away from the San Jose goal. Gaven sent a pass through the Earthquakes defense to an on-rushing Guevara on the left side of San Jose penalty box. Guevara fired a shot to the far corner past a diving Pat Onstad for the 1-0 lead. The MetroStars would score later on a corner kick when Guevara sent a ball from the right side into the middle of the Quakes area. MetroStars defender Eddie Pope flicked the ball toward the far post with his head, where it bounced off Waibel's back before the Metros Steve Jolley powered it into the net for a 2-0 lead The Quakes appeared to get a goal back following a Mullan cross late in the match, but the goal was again disallowed as Jamil Walker was determined to have touched the ball with his hand and past Jonny Walker.
