Earthquakes Weekly Update: October 8, 2018

San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has hired Matias Almeyda as head coach. The former Argentina National Team midfielder recently led Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara to the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League title. Interim head coach Steve Ralston will remain in his role for the final two matches of the 2018 regular season before Almeyda takes over in 2019. Read the full story here.

The San Jose Earthquakes will host Liga MX's Cruz Azul for an international friendly on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 5:15 p.m. PT at Avaya Stadium. Tickets for this match can be found here.

Avaya Stadium will host a friendly match between Liga MX sides Chivas and Pumas de la UNAM on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

This past Saturday, the Earthquakes suffered a 3-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls at Avaya Stadium. Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski scored his 144th MLS career goal in the match and is now just two shy of breaking the league's all-time goal-scoring record held by Landon Donovan (145).

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

International Success

The San Jose Earthquakes have a winning record in international friendlies, going 11-10-9 dating back to 1996. They have an 8-2-5 record in the past 14 friendly matches.

Our Captain

Chris Wondolowski is currently the Quakes' leading goal scorer in international friendlies with four goals, finding the back of the net against San Luis FC (1), Real Sociedad (2) and Eintracht Frankfurt (1).

First Meeting

Saturday's match will mark the first-ever meeting between Cruz Azul and the San Jose Earthquakes.

Tough Competition

The San Jose Earthquakes have a 1-7-3 record when playing Liga MX teams in international friendlies.

Homegrown Opportunities

In the Earthquakes' last international friendly, Homegrown players Gilbert Fuentes, JT Marcinkowski and Jacob Akanyirige made their Quakes debut while all five Homegrowns featured against Manchester United on July 22, 2018.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Get Earthquakes Fit presented by Sutter Health

Reno 1868 FC clinched their USL Playoff berth last Wednesday following their 2-0 win over Portland Timbers 2. This past Saturday, Reno earned a 0-0 draw against Phoenix Rising FC in Arizona. Earthquakes goalkeeper Matt Bersano secured clean sheets for both of Reno's matches.

This week, Reno will play their last match of the USL regular season when they take on Orange County SC on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Greater Nevada Field.

ACADEMY UPDATE

Last week, the U-15 and U-17 Earthquakes Boys' Academy teams traveled to Utah for the preliminary round of Generation adidas Cup qualifying.

The U-15s earned a 2-1 victory in their first match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC and lost 3-0 in their second match against Los Angeles FC.

The U-17s began their Generation adidas Cup qualifying on Sept. 22 in which they defeated the Portland Timbers 4-1. This past week, the U-17s suffered a 3-1 loss to hosts Real Salt Lake and were defeated by the Colorado Rapids 4-1.

This week, our Girls' Academy will take on La Roca Futbol Club on Saturday, Oct. 13.

The U-13 and U-14 Boys' Academy teams will take on Placer United SC on Saturday, Oct. 13.
