San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes will take on the Portland Timbers at Providence Park in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 14. San Jose is the only MLS club that is tasked with heading on the road to take on another team from MLS in the Fourth Round of the tournament.
The Quakes, who also played Portland at home on March 13 (W 2-1) and on the road on April 16 (L 3-1) and later June 1 in regular season action, now battle the Timbers a total of four times over the first three months of the season, including three at Providence Park.
San Jose will participate in the U.S. Open Cup for the 13th time in team history in 2016 and hold a 14-12 all-time record in U.S. Open Cup play. The Quakes best finish in the tournament came in 2004 when they advanced to the semifinals before losing to the Kansas City Wizards, 1-0. Ronald Cerritos is the club's all-time leader in goals in Open Cup competition, totaling four goals and one assist.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer, excluding teams majority owned by a higher-level outdoor professional league team. The tournament has crowned a champion for 102 consecutive years dating back to 1914. This year's winner will earn $250,000, a berth in the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions' League and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will take home $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will earn a $15,000 cash prize.
