San Jose Earthquakes News Release

San Jose (September 23, 2002) - The San Jose Earthquakes and the California Transplant Donor Network announced today that the Earthquakes will host Organ Donor Awareness night at the team's first playoff match on Wednesday, September 25 at Spartan Stadium. The match kicks off at 7:00 p.m. PT.

Quakes captain Jeff Agoos will be recognized as the spokesperson for organ donor awareness, and fans can pick up an Agoos player card as they enter the stadium that contains information on organ donation and transplantation, and a message from Agoos asking fans to show their commitment to organ and tissue donation. The card also doubles as a valid organ donation card.

The California Transplant Donor Network works with more than 150 hospitals in the region and provides the opportunity to improve and extend the lives of patients in Northern and Central California and Northern Nevada through organ and tissue donation for transplantation. The Transplant Network is federally designated and is accredited by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations.

The Transplant Network will have a booth at the East and West entrances to Spartan Stadium with information about organ donation along with the Agoos player cards. Fans can also sign up for a raffle at the information booths. A young organ donation recipient will receive the First Kick from Agoos on Wednesday at midfield just prior to kickoff.

For the second straight season, the Earthquakes play the Columbus Crew in the quarterfinals of the MLS Cup playoffs. After Game 1 this Wednesday night, the Quakes travel to Columbus for Game 2 on Saturday, September 28 at Crew Stadium at 4:30 p.m. PT. If necessary, Game 3 will be played on Wednesday, October 2 at Spartan Stadium at 7:00 p.m. PT. Last season, the Quakes swept the Crew in two games, winning 3-1 and 3-0 to advance to the semifinals.
