D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (September 23, 2002) - D.C. United announced today that the team will host El Salvador league power Club Deportivo Aguila in an international friendly on Saturday, October 26th, at RFK Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET. After failing to capture a post-season berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs, the Black-and-Red will begin off-season training on October 1.
"We are excited to host Aguila, one of the most storied clubs in El Salvador," said United Senior Vice President Stephen Zack. "D.C. United remains focused and committed in bringing the best international soccer to the nation's capital. This friendly will be a great challenge for our team and it will give our great supporters an opportunity to see a high-level match."
Tickets for the friendly exhibition are on sale now and are priced at $16 (Spectator), $22 (Premium), $28 (VIP) and $36 (Mezzanine). Fans may purchase individual tickets at all Ticketmaster outlets in the Washington, D.C. area or online at www.dcunited.com
The match will feature United midfielder/forward Eliseo Quintanilla playing against his former team. The 19-year-old Quintanilla, one of El Salvador's most promising young prospects, was a key component of Aguila's attack prior to signing with United on July 22 earlier this year.
Aguila, based in the eastern city of San Miguel, is arguably El Salvador's most popular side. The club gained promotion to the First Division in 1959 and has since captured 13 national league titles (the most of any team in El Salvador). Aguila claimed its last title in the 2001 Torneo Clausura, defeating rival C.D. FAS, 2-1, in the final. The current squad is led by Brazilian strikers Mauro Nunes and Alexander Prediguer, and by El Salvador national team fixtures Alexander Amaya Del Cid and Elmer Martinez.
United and Aguila met on one previous occasion, on November 1, 2000, in San Miguel, El Salvador, in a friendly match to raise funds to help rebuild Aguila's home ground, Estadio Juan Francisco Barraza. The Black-and-Red prevailed 2-1, on a pair of goals from Raul Diaz Arce.
