San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes kicked off their Get Earthquakes Fit program this week in two local San Jose schools. The program is in its seventh year and has now benefitted over 60 schools and 10,000 children. Get Earthquakes Fit is part of the Earthquakes community efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and the importance of being active for children.
Get Earthquakes Fit, which was originally developed in conjunction with local teachers and the Santa Clara County Office of Education, is a fun, five-week program designed to increase physical activity in the classroom and at home. This year, 5-10 schools will be incorporating this program in their 3rd and 4th grade curriculum.
This spring's schools include Montgomery Elementary, Aptitude Community Academy at Goss, Valle Vista Elementary and Gardner Elementary. Other schools will complete a fall session of the program.
The Get Earthquakes Fit program requires students to engage in 20 minutes of physical activity each day. Each participating classroom receives a booklet, featuring activities linked to the California state standards for physical education. The activities were developed by the Earthquakes training staff in conjunction with local teachers and the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
Each week a teacher will play a video featuring Earthquakes players designed to show the students some of the exercises in the program to further engage them by providing a visual aid of the exercises. Then, at the end of the program, an Earthquakes player makes an appearance to congratulate the students on living a more active lifestyle. Students are encouraged to continue playing Get Earthquakes Fit games at home with their families.
