New York remained the lone Eastern Conference team to remain unbeaten as the Red Bulls earned a 2-0 victory over San Jose Friday evening at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls are one of two teams in MLS that remain unbeaten (Real Salt Lake).
New York is in first place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points (3-0-2).
The 3-0-2 start is New York's second-best start through five games in team history. In 2010, New York started 4-1-0 (12 points). The 2007 team also started 3-0-2.
Tonight's victory has equaled the longest franchise unbeaten streak to start a season with 2007 (five games).
New York has the best home record in MLS since 2012. The Red Bulls are 34-7-12 at home since 2012 (114 points).
Sacha Kljestan scored his first MLS goal in nearly five years to open the scoring for New York. Kljestan scored in the 29th minute after Felipe and Bradley Wright-Phillips assisted on the goal. The last MLS goal for Kljestan came on April 24, 2010 for Chivas USA against San Jose.
New York is 11-16-9 all-time vs. San Jose and 9-4-6 all-time at Red Bull Arena against the Quakes. Head coach Jesse Marsch is 2-0-0 all-time against San Jose.
Mike Grella scored his second career MLS goal in the first half. Grella is tied for second on the team this season with two goals.
Luis Robles recorded his 21st career clean sheet in the victory. He is second in team history in career shutouts.
New York totaled a season-high 21 shots in the 2-0 victory. New York also recorded a season-high eight shots on goal in tonight's win over San Jose.
Captain Dax McCarty moved into a tie for ninth place in New York history with his 110th career start Friday evening. He is tied in the record books with current teammate Roy Miller.
New York is 2-0-2 at Red Bull Arena this season and has yet to allow a goal in two games at home this season.
New York returns to action Sunday, April 26 at home against the LA Galaxy. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. on ESPN2 from Red Bull Arena.
