CINCINNATI, Ohio - The San Jose Earthquakes fell to FC Cincinnati 6-0 on Saturday evening at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. FC Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute, and later scored five more goals in the second half.

The Earthquakes will continue on the road to face the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The match will kick off from Dick's Sporting Goods Park at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

The Earthquakes currently hold a 7-13-9 record (30 pts.) during the 2022 MLS regular season.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO

On a positive mentality looking onward to Wednesday's match at Colorado:

"The mentality is very simple: the team will keep fighting. Mathematically and not knowing other results, we kept fighting and played a great first half against a good team with great atmosphere and spectacular stadium. I think we played a good first half creating opportunities at the end. Right now, we need to recover and understand to fight each game the way we did in the first half and in recent matches to win more games from here until the end of the season. If we start considering whether we're in playoff contention or not, it will take a toll on us and lead us to results like tonight in the second half."

On handling Cincinnati's pressing style tonight:

"We were talking about Cincinnati and how they use five in the back, plus the two midfielders and then [Luciano] Acosta as the striker. We tried to rotate and get out of there with Tommy [Thompson] rotating the ball sometimes in the first half and get it out of the middle quick, but sometimes that wasn't possible. It's something that we need to control a little bit more because it's a transition every time you lose a ball in the zone too. The plan was to rotate [FC Cincinnati] a little bit, attract them and find the opposite side to attack them because they had a lot of density in the middle."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER SHEA SALINAS

On the locker room morale following tonight's defeat:

"I think [the locker room] feels the same when you lose by that big of a margin. Everyone feels defeated and frustrated. It's a moment of reflection when guys can look and see where they made mistakes, not just mistakes, everyone makes mistakes, but when we're not playing as a team, when we're not fighting for each other. Those are things we've done well this season. And tonight, we did it well in the first half. When we conceded early in the second half, we lost it a bit and then in the third goal everything fell apart."

On the younger players playing in difficult matches like tonight:

"I think getting minutes for young players is good, no matter the situation. It is a difficult game to come in to, down 3-0 and the other team is buzzing, and our heads are down a bit. But I think we came in, tried to make a difference and we didn't. Subs [didn't], the older guy [referring to himself] didn't, the younger guys didn't. We just didn't add any energy or add any possession or add any dangerous attacks. It's a good time to reflect, for young guys and veteran guys and say 'how can we be better? What can we do different when we come on?'. In those moments, we have to come on and help the team a little better."
