Modesto Nuts News Release

San Bernardino, CA. - A first-inning tally was enough to sink the Nuts in a 1-0 loss to the 66ers on Monday night at San Manuel Stadium.

Darren McCaughen (L, 0-1) made his California League debut with the Modesto Nuts (1-4) and surrendered a leadoff single to Luis Rengifo. After retiring the next two hitters quickly, Jared Walsh yanked a RBI double to push across the first and only run of the game. McCaughan worked a pair of walks in the third inning and was pulled in the fifth after a two-out error extended the inning. McCaughen allowed just four hits with four strikeouts.

Jeffeson Medina and Wyatt Mills teamed up to work 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the Nuts' bullpen with three strikeouts and just one hit.

Joe Gatto worked four innings and struck out seven in his start for the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino (3-2). Ryan Clark (W, 1-0) wiggled out of the biggest jams in the fifth and sixth innings. Bryson Brigman smacked a triple to start the fifth but was stranded there. Nick Zammarelli delivered a double to start the sixth but was thrown out at third trying advance on a sac bunt attempt.

In the ninth, Gareth Morgan reached on an error to start the inning. Matt Custred (S, 1/1) struck out the next two hitters before big league rehabber Ben Gamel approached the plate. Gamel smashed a line drive to left directly at the right fielder Jared Walsh who easily hauled it in to end the game.

Game two of the three-game series in San Bernardino is set for 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
