VISALIA, CA - Daulton Varsho put the Rawhide on the board and in the lead for good with a two run double down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning. One inning later, with two runners on once again, Varsho teed off on a Blake Rogers fastball and launched his first home run of the year over the scoreboard in right-center to put the Rawhide up 7-1.
Varsho put up a two-hit night, his second of the season with the Rawhide, and drove in five of the seven Visalia runs. While his contributions didn't decide the game, they set the tone and keep the Rawhide ahead comfortably.
He made a bid for a third hit in his third at bat by smoking a line drive to center, but the frozen rope hung in the air too long and center fielder Edward Olivares snagged it out of the air.
Varsho's five RBIs were the most by any Rawhide player in a single game this year, and were the first runs he'd driven in since he singled home Marcus Wilson for the first Visalia run of 2018. He now has two multi-hit games in his first four contests in a Rawhide uniform.
Anfernee Grier added an RBI of his own in the first inning by clubbing a ringing double off the top of the center field wall that brought home Varsho from second.
On the mound, Connor Grey delivered a strong season debut, but had a few missteps out of the gate. He surrendered a first-inning home run to Hudson Potts and a leadoff single to Brad Zunica to start the second.
Two pitches after Zunica's single, Ruddy Giron hit a sharp grounder straight up the middle that looked ticketed for center. Rawhide Shortstop Camden Duzenack deftly handled the grounder and, with an off-balance, basket-style toss to Adam Walton, started a 6-4-3 double play to clear the bases.
Following the twin killing, Grey (W, 1-0) proceeded to retire the next 10 Lake Elsinore (1-4) batters he faced and ended up becoming the first Rawhide starter to pitch through six innings in 2018. He allowed just one run on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Storm starter Ronald Bolanos (L, 0-1) lasted just one inning and was tagged for four runs, three earned, on three hits and two walks in the frame.
Visalia (3-2) received a perfect night from their bullpen, with Kevin Ginkel and Josh Taylor combining to throw three clean innings of relief.
The Rawhide continue the three-game series with the Storm tomorrow evening, matching up RHP Sam McWilliams (1-0, 3.60) against RHP Emmanuel Ramirez (0-0, -. - ). First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM and tickets are still available on rawhidebaseball.com.
