Early Offense Helps Spiedies Hold on against RubberDucks

BINGHAMTON, NY - Powered by a four-run first inning, the Binghamton Spiedies pulled out a 7-6 win over the Akron RubberDucks Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium.

David Thompson went 4-4 with three RBI. He drove in the first Spiedies run with an RBI single in the first. Andres Gimenez capped off the first-inning rally with a three-run home run to right. It was his fourth homer of the year and brought his RBI total to 22.

Binghamton (7-13, 42-42) led 6-0 after four on a Thompson RBI single in the third and Braxton Lee's solo homer. It was his second home run of the season.

Akron (7-12, 41-46) scored five runs in the top of the fifth. Nellie Rodriguez and Logan Ice each belted two-run doubles. It marks the second straight night the RubberDucks scored five runs in one inning.

Thompson provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh. Rodriguez homered for the second straight night to pull the RubberDucks back within one.

RHP Harol Gonzalez (4-3) picked up his first win since May 8. He went 5.1 innings, allowed five runs on seven hits, and struck out four. LHP Eli Lingos (0-1) suffered the loss as he was tagged with six runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings. RHP Matt Blackham picked up his sixth save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Binghamton and Akron play the final game before the all-star break Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. First pitch is at 2:05 on NewsRadio 1290 AM WNBF and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pregame show starts at 1:50 PM.
