Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Modesto, CA- The Modesto Nuts got going early offensively and used excellent pitching to cruise to a 5-1 win over the 66ers at John Thurman Field on Saturday. The loss means Inland Empire will need a win on Sunday in the Cal League's first half finale to earn a split of the four-game set.
With one out in the bottom of the first Modesto (26-43) got a single from Wes Rogers and then another by Shane Hoelscher against Inland Empire starter Jeremy Rhoades (1-8). Drew Weeks followed with an RBI single to left to put Modesto up 1-0. Dom Nunez then flared a ball down the left field line that rattled around the Sixers bullpen allowing two runs to come in; the double gave the Nuts a 3-0 advantage. Modesto was not finished as Rhoades walked the nine-hole hitter on four pitches to open the second and then surrendered at two-run homer to Nuts' centerfielder Omar Carrizales to make it 5-0. The Cal League All-Star has homered in back-to-back games of the series, his first two dingers of the year. Rhoades did not allow a run in his final two innings of work.
Modesto Starter Parker French rolled through six innings allowing a run in his final frame of work when Tim Arakawa came home on a wild pitch. French, a University of Texas product allowed just three hits and a walk with six Ks to improve to 3-5 on the year and 1-1 against Inland Empire (22-47).
The Sixers bullpen was stout and kept Inland Empire in the contest. Eric Alonzo allowed just a walk in two innings with a strikeout. Ronnie Muck and Kevin Grendell each tossed perfect frames with two Ks apiece but the Sixers offense mustered just four hits (all singles) on the night and was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The 66ers did get two runners aboard in the eighth but reliever Logan Cozart came in and got Sixers' DH Taylor Ward to pop out to right to end the threat. Cozart tossed a perfect ninth and earned his second save of the year.
The Sixers got two hits on the night from David Fletcher who also took a walk and stole his tenth base of the year in as many attempts. Wade Wass singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 12-games.
The series and first half conclude Sunday at 1:05 pm. The contest can be heard at 66ers.com. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
