
Rawhide Strand 11 in 7-5 Loss to Lake Elsinore

VISALIA, CA - Lake Elsinore (32-38) jumped out to an early lead and rode a late push in the ninth inning to earn a 7-5 win over the Visalia Rawhide (46-24) to close out the first half of the California League season at Recreation Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
Lake Elsinore homered six times in the four-game series including DH Josh VanMeter homering in the final three games of the series.
In the second inning against LHP Cody Reed (0-2, 3.60), 1B Trae Santos hit his fourth home run of the season following a hit batsman to give Lake Elsinore an early 2-0 lead.
In Reed's final frame, a one-out double by SS Javier Guerra started a rally that C Jose Ruiz capped off with an RBI double to push the lead to 3-0 Lake Elsinore.
Reed pitched five innings and allowed three runs (earned) on four hits, a walk and he struck out four, taking his second loss of the year with Visalia.
The Rawhide offense had plenty of opportunities in the game against RHP Brett Kennedy (2-5, 4.19), who made the start for Lake Elsinore. In Kennedy's five scoreless innings of work the Rawhide stranded seven men, including the bases loaded in the second inning.
Along with the five hits the Rawhide picked up in those five innings they were also gifted three walks, a hit batsman and 3B Henry Castillo reached on a wild pitch after striking out and yet they could not score.
Kennedy walked three and struck out four in his five scoreless frames to earn the win for Lake Elsinore.
In the sixth inning RHP Nick Baker entered for Reed and allowed a solo home run to VanMeter, his third of the series that increased the Storm lead to 4-0.
Visalia finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth against LHP Brandon Alger when C Tyler Baker, after a walk and single knocked in Castillo with a groundout to make it 4-1.
RHP Jency Solis entered for the seventh and gave up another run to the Storm. After Solis hit a batter, 3B Luis Urias doubled home Marcus Greene, who entered as a pinch runner earlier in the game for a 5-1 advantage.
The offense awoke in the bottom of the seventh against Alger when 1B Marty Herum blasted a two-run home run over the left-centerfield wall following a 2B Domingo Leyba single to cut the lead to 5-3 Storm. The single by Leyba extended his hitting streak to 13 games. RHP Ben Pauluas entered and Castillo greeted him with a triple. SS Dawel Lugo, who had a three hit day, singled and made it 5-4 Lake Elsinore.
RHP Cameron Gann came on in the ninth and gave up two big insurance runs to Lake Elsinore on three hits a walk and a sacrifice bunt to make it 7-4 before Visalia plated an unearned run in the ninth against RHP Phil Maton (SV 1) for the 7-5 final.
The Rawhide head into the break winners of 12 of their last 15 ball games despite losing three-out-of-four to the Storm in the final series.
The 2016 All-Star break runs Monday, June 20th through Wednesday, June 23rd and then the Rawhide begin their second half title defense in Inland Empire to take on the 66ers for the first time this season on Thursday, June 24th with a 7:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
