Early Flurry Carries Wolves Past Milwaukee
February 1, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI---The Chicago Wolves reeled off four goals in the opening 15 minutes Friday night and rolled to a 5-2 victory in Amtrak Rivalry action at Milwaukee.
Forwards Alex Friesen, Bill Sweatt, Guillaume Desbiens, Mike Davies and Eric Kattelus lit the lamp for the Wolves (21-14-3-2), who won for the seventh time in nine games. Joe Cannata registered a career-high 40 saves to earn the win for Chicago.
The Wolves produced four goals in the first period, which represented their highest-scoring period this season. Friesen started the slew of scores with his first American Hockey League marker, a tap-in past Admirals goalie Jeremy Smith (15-15-3) at 6:06. He was assisted by left wing Devin DiDiomete, who signed a Professional Tryout Contract with the Wolves earlier in the day, and Desbiens.
Sweatt followed up with a power-play goal, pouncing on a Smith rebound at 8:49. Then Desbiens wristed a one-timer through Smith at 12:50 to earn his first multi-point game since Oct. 2011. Davies made it 4-0 Wolves at 14:26 when he potted another Smith rebound into the mesh.
Chicago showed no signs of slowing once the second period began as Kattelus netted his first AHL goal off a Smith rebound at 4:41. The Admirals (19-18-3-3) finally responded with a short-handed marker rifled by Mark Van Guilder past Cannata at 11:06.
Starting the third period down 5-1, Milwaukee swapped Smith (22 saves) for Magnus Hellberg (6 saves) in net. Meanwhile the Admirals offense returned to work and centerman Cam Reid beat Cannata for his first score of the season at 7:16.
That would be all the Admirals could muster against Cannata (4-2-0), who has not allowed more than two goals in any of his seven career AHL starts.
Chicago returns to Allstate Arena at 7 p.m. Saturday for an Illinois Lottery Cup contest against Peoria. For tickets, call1-800-THE-WOLVES or visit ChicagoWolves.com.
