St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Eric O'Dell netted two goals, including the game-winner, as the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Binghamton Senators 4-2 Friday night at Mile One Centre.
O'Dell's late second period marker stood up as the deciding goal, while Kael Mouillierat notched a goal and two assists in the win. Kevin Clark had a goal and an assist and Carl Klingberg chipped in with a pair of helpers.
Eddie Pasquale was not busy for St. John's but was solid when called upon, stopping 21-of-23 shots for his 13th win of the season. In the Binghamton crease, reigning CCM/AHL Player of the Week Robin Lehner made 30 saves in picking up just his sixth loss of the season.
St. John's opened the scoring on a power play just 2:20 into the opening frame on O'Dell team-leading 10th of the season. After Derek Grant was whistled for boarding just 42 seconds into the game, St. John's capitalized with the man advantage. Mouillierat received the puck near the side boards on the right side and fed O'Dell, who gathered the puck and fired a shot from the slot that beat a screened Lehner to make it 1-0 for the home team.
Binghamton drew even on a strange goal late in the first. Jean-Gabriel Pageau spun and shot the puck from the boards near the top of the left circle and the puck caromed off a Senators player before hitting the back of Travis Ramsey's skate. The multiple deflections caught Pasquale off guard, resulting in a 1-1 tie heading into the first intermission.
St. John's regained the lead early in the second frame on Clark's fifth goal of the season. Ben Chiarot made a nice play at centre ice to protect the puck and turn up ice before finding Clark cross-ice on the right wing. The Winnipeg native stepped in over the blueline fired a hard slap shot that cleanly bear Lehner, giving the IceCaps a 2-1 lead.
O'Dell notched his second of the game later in the period to give the IceCaps a two-goal advantage. Mouillierat picked up the puck behind the Senators net after a turnover down low and went back against the grain to find O'Dell, who was creeping into the low slot to Lehner's left. O'Dell one-timed the puck past the Swedish netminder to make it 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Binghamton pulled within one midway through the third period on a power play marker from Shane Prince. After a forced turnover behind the IceCaps net, Stephane Da Costa got the puck out front to Hugh Jessiman for a quick shot and Prince was able to pounce on the rebound to beat a scrambling Pasquale to make it 3-2.
However, St. John's added the clincher on a power play at 16:06 of the third. Carl Klingberg passed back to the point to Derek Meech, who swung the puck to Mouillierat on the right side near the top of the circle. Mouillierat snapped a shot that beat Lehner on the short side after a great screen by Patrice Cormier to make it 4-2 and put the game out of reach.
St. John's went 2-for-8 with the man advantage while killing 4-of-5 shorthanded situations.
The IceCaps and Senators finish off their two-game set Saturday night at Mile One as St. John's looks to extend its home winning streak to three games.
