Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets failed to overcome an early three-run deficit in a 3-2 loss to the Trenton Thunder Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets put the tying run on base in the ninth, but their comeback bid fell one run short.
The Thunder jumped on B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon in the first. Adonis Garcia started the game by doubling to right and scored two batters later on a sac fly by David Adams. Addison Maruszak capped the four-hit inning with an RBI single, giving Trenton a two-run lead. The visitors tacked on another run in the second on an RBI double by Garcia.
Binghamton did not crack the scoreboard until the fourth against starter Craig Heyer. Dustin Martin led off the frame by sending a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for his second homer in as many games, cutting the deficit to two. The B-Mets put runners at second and third later in the frame, but Sean Kazmar grounded out to end the inning.
After allowing six hits in the first two innings, Cohoon settled in and posted five scoreless innings to cap his final start of the season. He exited after allowing three runs on ten hits over seven innings.
Heyer came back and posted a scoreless fifth before handing off to the Thunder bullpen. Lee Hyde tossed a perfect sixth and Mark Montgomery retired every B-Met he faced in the seventh and eighth.
Owning a two-run lead, Ryan Pope took over in the ninth and fell into immediate trouble. Martin led off the inning by ripping a double down the right field line. After a ground out and a strikeout, Jefry Marte cut the deficit to one by bouncing an RBI single to center. Raul Reyes came to the plate representing the winning run, but struck out looking to end the game.
Heyer (3-5) allowed one run over five innings to earn his first win since May 8. Cohoon (8-11) suffered the loss while Pope collected his eighth save. Armando Rodriguez threw two scoreless innings to close Binghamton's pitching tab.
The B-Mets (67-73) continue their series Sunday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the hill against LHP Vidal Nuno. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
