Calgary Vipers News Release


For a second straight night the Calgary Vipers (28-20) climbed out of an early hole as they defeated the Edmonton Capitals (27-19) 11-6 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down 3-0 in the second inning Calgary scored 11 unanswered runs including five runs innings in both the third and fifth frames. The Vipers collected 13 hits in the first five innings but also capitalized on four Edmonton errors to score seven unearned runs. At the plate newcomer Chad Ehrnsberger led the way with three runs batted in, two doubles, and two runs scored while also making an excellent play defensively. With the win the Vipers move into a tie for second place and a half game back in the North Division.

Edward Valdez (3-2) tossed a quality start for Calgary with six innings while allowing three earned runs while out of the bullpen Mike Burns threw a three-up, three-down final frame. Lou Pote (4-2) picked up the loss for Edmonton by giving up 13 hits in four and two-third innings.

Edmonton opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning when Matt Rogelstad singled, Todd Linden reached on a fielder's choice when a double-play throw was missed which allowed him to move into scoring position, and score on a Brent Metheny run batted in single for a 1-0 lead.

The Capitals increased their lead to 3-0 in the second frame as Carlos Duncan was hit by a pitch, Nick Valdez doubled, Steve Brown collected a sacrifice fly, and Rogelstad singled a second run.

Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 score when Chad Ehrnsberger doubled in his first at-bat with the team, Aaron Dunsmore singled, and Edward Valdez collected a RBI base hit.

The Vipers took over the lead at 6-3 in the third as Wilver Perez walked, Jimmy Rohan singled, Drew Miller drove in a run while reaching on a fielding error, Justin Tellam singled to load the bases, Ehrnsberger emptied the bases with a double for three RBI, and Dunsmore singled home a run to cap off the five run frame.

In the bottom of the fifth Calgary scored a second five run frame for a 11-3 advantage when Dunsmore reached on a fielder's choice, with two outs Templeton reached on a fielding error, Valdez and Kaplan both singled for RBI, Perez doubled home two, and Rohan doubled in Perez to conclude the inning.

Enrique Cruz got a run back for Edmonton in the sixth with a solo home run for a 11-4 score.

The Capitals scored again in the seventh as Rogelstad singled, Linden walked, and Metheny drove in a run with a base knock for a 11-5 game.

For a third straight inning Edmonton tallied one in the eighth when Valdez and Mike Hrynio hit back-to-back doubles for a 11-6 score.

This series concludes in Calgary at Foothills Stadium against the Edmonton Capitals on Thursday July 14th at 6:30 with Dan the One Man Band performing.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
