Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-6) fell victim to a big first inning for the Lincoln Saltdogs (5-7) in an 8-4 loss on Sunday afternoon.
The Saltdogs jumped out to a big lead in the bottom of the first inning. Evan Tartaglia led off the inning with a double. Pichi Balet followed with an infield single to advance Tartaglia to third base. Bryan Warner follows with a single to score Tartaglia for a 1-0 lead. Cory Harris laid down a bunt single. The Saltdogs fourth consecutive hit left the bases loaded. A wild pitch by Canaries starter Aaron Garrison allowed Balet to score, and an errant throw back to the plate by catcher David Hoffman scored Warner for a 3-0 Saltdogs lead. Harris moved from first to third on the wild pitch and error, and he scored on a groundout by Josh Patton. After one inning, the Saltdogs led 4-0.
The Canaries got a run back in the third inning. David Hoffman singled, Angelo Fermin walked, and Anthony Monegan got a base hit to load the bases with one out. Ralph Santana followed with a groundball to the shortstop. Monegan was putout at second base, but the relay throw wasn't in time. Santana stayed out of the double play, and allowed Hoffman to score, making it 4-1.
The Saltdogs got another run in the bottom of the third. Cory Harris struck out, but advanced to first base on a wild pitch. Harris took second on another wild pitch and scored on a single by Kevin Sullivan, and after three Lincoln led 5-1.
Lincoln added two runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, Paul Powell, Jay Yaconetti, and Evan Tartaglia all doubled. Powell and Yaconetti both scored, and the Saltdogs went ahead 7-1.
The Canaries got a run in each the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, David Hoffman singled to score Chris Hall. In the eighth, Edgard Clemente singled to score Chad Hermansen. The runs cut the Saltdogs lead to four runs, 7-3.
Lincoln added a final run in the eighth. Brett Cooley got on after a throwing error by third baseman Chris Hall and scored on a groundout by Evan Tartaglia for an 8-3 lead.
Hall redeemed himself in the ninth inning by hitting his second homer of the season. Hall's solo shot was the Canaries only run in the final inning, as the Birds fell 8-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Aaron Garrison (4-4) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Ben Fox (6-2) picked up the win for the Saltdogs.
The Canaries now head to the All-Star Break where First Baseman Abner Arroyo and Catcher Dennis Anderson will represent the Canaries on the American Association's All-Star Team. The American Association plays the Can-Am League in El Paso, Texas on Tuesday night.
