St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
ST. JOSEPH, MO-With first place on the line heading into the All-Star Break, the Blacksnakes (6-7, 32-29) early lead would not hold up as Sioux City (7-6, 31-30) stormed to the lead before holding off St. Joe, 8-4. For the second straight night the 'Snakes rallied from a big hole, only to fall short.
After the 'Snakes plated one in the first when Mark Burke drove in Scooter Jordan, Sioux City scored five times in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead and knock starter Donovan Graves from the game.
Again, St. Joe did not get the start they were looking for as Donovan Graves (6-3) lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and taking the loss.
Sioux City added a pair in the seventh for a seemingly comfortable 7-1 margin, but St. Joe again chipped away in the seventh with two of their own on a Wil Quintana two-run double. In the eighth, the Blacksnakes struck for an unearned run when Jimmy Mojica came through with a two-out run-scoring single. Trailing 7-4, St. Joe brought up Ben Thomas as the potential tying run, but he flied out to end the inning.
The Explorers' Jorge Moreno hit a solo home run to start the ninth for an insurance run and the 8-4 final.
St. Joe has now dropped seven of their last nine and is below-.500 for the first time in the second half after starting 4-0. The 'Snakes finish just 7-10 against the Explorers in 2006.
The Blacksnakes have three days of rest to prepare for the final push of the season over the All-Star Break. The American Association All-Stars take on the Can-Am League All-Stars Tuesday in El Paso, TX. The 'Snakes are back on the field Thursday at St. Paul, MN, against the Saints. Game time is 7:05pm to begin a three-game series, with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show beginning at 6:45pm at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
