Cape Breton Eagles News Release

NOTES FROM THE GAME - Samuel Johnson completed his hat trick with nine seconds left to give the Eagles a thrilling 6-5 win in overtime. Gio DiMattia picked up his first career win in nets for the Eagles, stopping 41 of 46 shots.

- After opening the scoring, Halifax rallied from down 3-1 & 5-3 to force overtime, including two goals from

Zachary L'Heureux. Markus Vidicek also scored twice for Halifax.

- Ivan Ivan scored and added two assists for the Eagles, while Charles Boutin and Angelo Fullerton both scored as well.

- Zach Biggar registed his second two assist night in his second game with the Eagles, while fellow newcomers Jacob Newcombe & Brayden Schmitt each collected their first points for Cape Breton.

- In the absence of Nicolas Ruccia & Oliver Satny, affiliate Xavier Farrah served as the Eagles backup netminder.

Vidicek opened the scoring for Halifax after the halfway mark of the opening frame, giving the Mooseheads momentum but before period's end Ivan found a tying goal. The first period was played almost entirely at five on five, with the exception of one Moosehead penalty which Halifax was able to kill off.

The Eagles came out flying to start the second stanza, opening a 3-1 goal lead in the first six minutes with goals from Boutin (after a give and go with Luke Patterson) and Johnson. Alex Doucet put a shot in the top corner to pull the visitors within one at the 12:37 mark.

Halifax tied the game on their first power play of the night, Vidicek finishing a cross-ice pass from Mathieu Cataford with just under three minutes to play in the period. However, despite the late time of the goal, the Eagles still had time to rebuild the two goal margin before the next buzzer.

Johnson restored the edge on an Eagle power play, and Fullerton added to the margin with a low shot to beat Brady James. It was 5-3 after the second stanza. L'Heureux took control of the game in the third period, pulling the Mooseheads within one, and then tying the goal with under two minutes to play.

Overtime was played at a frantic pace- no whistles for 4:51 of evenly played action, each team registering four shots on goal. When it looked like the game was destined for overtime, Johnson found a way to get the puck by James, sending a season high crowd of over 3500 into frenzy as the home team won its second straight game.

DiMattia picked up his first career win, stopping 41 of 46 shots while James took the loss, allowing six goals on 33 shots.
